Does being a geek equate to an unhealthy lifestyle and diet?

As we have elaborated on in previous posts in our styles of geeks series, a geek is typically someone who is fanatical (borderline crazed D&D fan) about a particular subject which they devote much of their time to. It is commonly revolved around subcultures such as video games and music, but is not limited to these as the area for geekness reaches far and wide.

So when it comes to food, what do geeks eat? Does being a geek mean you are healthy or unhealthy? Mainstream media and popular culture have been repeatedly depicting geeks as slightly overweight, pale kids who usually have bad skin and hygiene regimens because they are too busy reenacting battle scenes from their favourite sci-fi films. And we’ve believed it to be true. Because they seem to look a certain way, we assume geeks eat a certain way. But this is mostly due to personal choice and not because of their geek status.

But of course, if you are a health geek then you are going to devote a lot of your time studying and buying the latest trends and products of the health food industry. Commonly, geeks can’t really half-ass it — they’re all or nothing. If you are a sports geek, you will concern yourself with the latest sports and fitness trends which will definitely include diet and nutrition. So these geeks are by definition healthy.

Lifestyle often dictates diet. If you are leading a healthy lifestyle — geek or non-geek — your diet will be one which provides you with the most essential nutrients your body requires to stay fit. Bon appétit!
